The course is about animal use in science and the Three Rs – Replacement, reduction and refinement of animals used for scientific purposes. It is an important topic incorporating elements of animal welfare and good science (without resorting to animal use, but instead alternative methods and approaches).
The aim of this course is to support primary and secondary teachers in presenting the subject in their life-sciences classes, or in other classes such as social studies, or citizenship encouraging critical thinking and debate and reflection on society’s attitude towards animals in general. It also introduces the EU legislation governing animal use in science. Learning scenarios and resources are offered for teachers to use when preparing their lessons on the topic.
The course and all the material were developed with teachers through the European Schoolnet (EUN), and many lessons have already been given on this topic using the material.
