Title: From Gilgamesh to Gilgamos. Dwelling, thinking and culture in Mesopotamia and Rome.
Description: Mesopotamia is often seen as the cradle of our civilization. First the invention of agriculture lead to sedentarization, but also the invention of irrigation later greatly influenced settlement patterns. How this influenced thinking and culture in Mesopotamia is what we are going to try to find out. And we will venture a small comparison into the Roman world at the end.
Speaker: Tom Boiy started to study Ancient History out of love for the Romans; during these studies he got more and more interested in the empires of the successors of Alexander the Great and switched Assyriology to be able to use the cuneiform sources. When starting at the EEB4 11 years ago he found his first love again with Latin and Roman history and with this talk he is returning a bit to Mesopotamia and the Near East in general.
